Theodora Viran has a way with forests, blossoms, creeping vines, composting, paranoia, and sudden death. She sees deception in every shadow, a trap in every word, and the universe has always been someone else's manipulative game, but when she makes a promise to save a childhood friend, it becomes a promise she can't break without breaking her view of the world.

Nanowhere... it's a love story with all the usual elements: rogue soldiers, computer hacking, tyranny, cryptography, hit-men with an affinity for rolled adhesives, rebellious skateboarders, and sentient billion-node self-organizing nanotech ghosts.

Here's a clip of Cory Doctorow's kind words on Boing Boing:

Chris Howard has released an...interesting and well-written...sf thriller called Nanowhere along with a bunch of supplementary materials that purports to be the lab notes and publications of one of the book's characters ...

Saltwater Witch

We are all Seaborn.
All life began in the Ocean.
The tides, the salt, the rolling waves
are in our souls,
and the sea will always have
the power to call us home.

Seaborn

Nominated for Urban Fantasy Land's Readers' Choice Awards
"From the first page of Seaborn, you are immersed. Chris Howard navigates a wild ride through a brilliantly edgy and richly atmospheric alter-world. Here is a fresh, formidable spin on sf/f and Howard is a talent to watch out for. Seaborn will leave you spellbound"
--ADELE GRIFFIN
Seaborn is a mix of The Little Mermaid story tossed with a limb or two of zombies and entranced with a crimson droplet of ‘I see dead people’. It is a refreshing step away from the cliché vampire or werewolf book; after all who really writes about things that go bump in the sea? In a tale of two worlds colliding, humans and the Seaborn battle for the control of Poseidon’s regime of the ocean, while bits of environmental controversy ooze through the pages like a hidden agenda.

The Wreath of Poseidon

The Wreath of Poseidon is Saltwater Witch remixed by my daughter Chloe and I. This version of the story is in 3rd person (Saltwater Witch is in 1st), and this version is a bit longer, contains more story, including some scenes cut from the original. We went back to the original 3rd person story I wrote with some help from a nine-year-old Chloe (She's seventeen now).

"Chris Howard is someone I will be paying close attention to from this day forward. As a debut novel Seaborn succeeds where many others in the same class have not. It puts together a fascinating new world (within our own), drawing from Greek mythology and developing that into its own unique fantasy creation."
--Fantasy&SciFi Lovin' Review

"This is a must-read, must-have and worshipped. This mythology junkie is more than satisfied and begs people to buy more than one copy as soon as possible. If I am correct, after several generations a first issue of this will be quite valuable."
--Temple Library Reviews

Seaborn is no regular fantasy about mermaids. It is an epic, created with a linguist's, a sociologist's, and a poet's touch....Chris Howard has created a rich complicated world....We are obviously in the hands of a great writer..."
--Blogcritics

"As epic fantasy Seaborn is imaginative and flush with mythological detail. The ocean dwelling Seaborn culture is fascinating....a fresh and entertaining read..."
--SciFiGuy

Amazon.com | Amazon.uk | Amazon.de | Amazon.fr

Originally published in Fantasy Magazine (June, 2010), "Lost Dogs and Fireplace Archaeology" is about the children of the men and women in the US Army who grow up going to ten different schools, who lose and find friends at every post, and the pieces of themselves they leave behind every time they move.

If you can see into the future, gods will take notice of you. Aldred’s brother is killed unjustly and Aldred is forbidden to bury or honor him. He defies the decree, and makes a pact with strangers, an old man who won’t show his face and a giant who requires a final battle before he lights the pyre for Aldred’s brother. Aldred returns to face his doom and discovers that an agreement he has made in life pursues him after death.

The Wine of Ravens is a set of six heroic fantasy stories that cover a good part of the life of Aldred the Saxon, from his first meeting with old One-eye (Diminisher of Peace), his journey across Europe, tangling with the unjust, with various forms of death, to the near East exploring belief among the ruins of the once great Roman city of Caesarea Maritima (The Breaker of Gods), and then back north to his homeland and across the channel to Britain.

- Traveling through late Roman Europe
- Early Medicine
